Kutepova I, Kamil A, Wilson AR and Rehm CD (2025) Declining trends in sweetness of the diet in the United Kingdom: 2008/9–2018/19. Front. Nutr. 12:1521501. doi: 10.3389/fnut.2025.1521501
The study by Kutepova et al. (2025) analysed dietary data from the UK's National Diet and Nutrition Survey Rolling Program between 2008/09 and 2018/19, involving 15,655 individuals. It found that the sweetness of the UK diet, measured in grams of approximate sugar equivalent (ASE) per day, declined by about 10% over the decade. This reduction was larger in beverages (20.7%) compared to foods (4.4%). The decline in dietary sweetness was attributed to a combination of factors, including consumer behaviour changes, product reformulations, public health policies, awareness programs, and media campaigns.
