A: As a global food and beverage company, PepsiCo recognizes that it has an opportunity to use its scale and reach to help build a more sustainable, resilient, and inclusive food system —one that creates shared value by operating within planetary boundaries and inspiring positive change for the planet and people. PepsiCo has a responsibility, given our scale, to provide nutritious options that help empower people to make better choices. We are working hard to offer more permissible options to consumers and looking for ways to make these options affordable and accessible to individuals. Personalized Nutrition is one way we can achieve these efforts.
A: We believe PN will shape the future of health and wellness. Personalized nutrition, where nutrigenomics, dietary intake data, biomarker analyses and other general lifestyle information can be combined, holds great promises to make nutritional and dietary advice more individually acceptable and thus more effective. There are two specific emerging domains that we see opportunity for advancement. The first is behavioral science - how can we help people make long-lasting behavior change? The second is biomarkers or measurements of someone’s health and wellness status. The aim is to understand what is possible, for whom this approach could be beneficial and how such a personalized offering could succeed in the future in society. Research based on current market offerings in this field, interviews with a wide range of stakeholders and consumer reactions to personalized nutrition concepts, shows that the key to personalized nutrition is not just about improving nutritional advice or communicating more and better about it, it is about coaching people to bring about a lasting behavior change. The ultimate goal is to combine behavioral science and biomarker analyses to provide personalized nutrition advice for tangible health benefits.
A: The demand for personalized nutrition solutions and products continues to grow. However, as regulations lag and the field continue to be dominated by small players, there is a risk of losing consumer trust if not all adhere to the same level of scientific rigor. Industry-wide standards or guiding principles would help to ensure integrity and trust are maintained.
